August 20, 2007: Mainstream churches will today demonstrate against the homosexuals' demand to be recognised.
Grace Kaiso, the secretary of the Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC), said the demonstration would be followed by a rally at the Young Men's Christian's Association in Wandegeya, a city suburb. "We want to encourage the population to resist the demands of homosexuals. No one should accept a change in the Constitution meant to suit the needs of lesbians and gays," Kaiso said yesterday.
The demonstration, the first ever against lesbians and gays, will not have a chief-walker, Kaiso added.
"The Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, granted us permission to hold a demonstration," he said.
But Kampala Extra Police chief Edward Ochom and acting operations boss Grace Turyagumanawe said they not had seen UJCC's request. "I do not have any information about that demonstration. They should have informed us so that we offer guidelines," Ochom said.
Lesbians and gays, under their umbrella organisation, Sexual Minorities Uganda, last week demanded for acceptance and an end to discrimination.
