February 21, 2007: The bishop of South Rwenzori Diocese has warned Christians in Kasese against homosexuality and described the act as an abomination in biblical teachings and the African culture.

Since God created Eve as Adams companion, it means men are meant to marry women and not fellow men, or women marrying fellow women, Bishop Jackson Thembo nzere-bende said on Sunday.

South Rwenzori Diocese is one of the Anglican communities world over that have publicly opposed the ordination of homosexuals as ministers in the Church.

Nzerebende told a congregation at St. Pauls Cathedral, Kamaiba in Kasese town that some Christians had printed their own Bibles in support of same-sex relationships.

The aim of such people is to turn people from the truth to evil. And this is the work of the devil, the prelate said, while commissioning 30 Christians he had confirmed.

He also discouraged Christians from engaging in witchcraft, saying prayer was the solution to problems.

Present was the daughter of the Rwenzururu King, Charles Wesley Mumbere, Christabel Furaha Kyibanzanga.

She condemned the oppression of women, saying the practice had led to family breakages.

She asked Christians to stick to the original biblical teachings.

The issue of homosexuality has split the Anglican Church worldwide.
