Invitation to comment on the draft NNI Strategic Plan

Starting November 1, public comment is invited for thirty days on the draft Strategic Plan for the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI),which is posted at the NNI Strategy Portal.

The NNI Strategic Plan is the framework that underpins the nanotechnology work of 25 NNI member agencies. It aims to ensure that advances in nanotechnology R&D and their applications to agency missions and the broader national interest continue unabated in this still-young area of research and development. Its purpose is to facilitate achievement of the NNI vision by laying out guidance for agency leaders, program managers, and the research community regarding planning and implementation of nanotechnology R&D investments and activities.

NNI Strategic Planning Workshop: Providing Critical Stakeholder Input to the 2010 NNI Strategic Plan
July 13-14, 2010 at the Palomar Hotel in Arlington, VA
The goals of this workshop were to:

  • Bring together those who are new to nanoscale science, engineering, and technology as well as those familiar with the NNI.

  • Obtain stakeholder input regarding the goals and objectives of an updated NNI Strategic Plan. This is currently under development and scheduled for completion by December 2010.

  • Gather suggestions for the U.S. Government interagency task force that is drafting the new plan. This is an update of the December 2007 NNI Strategic Plan (see http://www.nano.gov/NNI_Strategic_Plan_2007.pdf).

10th Anniversary of the National Nanotechnology Initiative Leading to a Revolution in Technology and Industry, December 8-10, 2010

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, the National Nanotechnology Initiative at Ten: Nanotechnology Innovation Summit will be held December 8-10, 2010, at the Gaylord National Convention Center just outside Washington D.C. The NNI consists of the cooperative nanotech-related activities of 25 Federal agencies focused on producing revolutionary and transformative technological breakthroughs. NNI Nanotechnology Innovation Summit brings together the nation's leadership in nanotechnology research, development, implementation, policy and finance along with a showcase of the top nanotechnology technologies generated through the NNI support.

Program Highlights

  • Nanotechnology Innovation Showcase, presenting the nation's top transformational technologies presently in development for commercialization. Submit your technology today and participate in the nation's largest nanotechnology licensing, partnering and investment marketplace.

  • Dynamic Speakers & Panelists: Bringing Disruptive Technologies to Market, Scaling And Financing Energy Technology, Views from the White House and the Hill, Building Regional Clusters, and  more.

  • Pre-conference Workshop: Meet with Program Managers from the suite of NNI participating agencies and understand agency priorities and submission requirements, and discuss future project opportunities in a special 1-day event.

2010 Defense Manufacturing Conference
November 29 - December 2, 2010

The Defense Manufacturing Conference (DMC) is the nation's largest forum for scientists, technologists, engineers, managers, leaders and policy makers in the defense manufacturing industrial base. The meeting is the product of a partnership of the Military Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. An unprecedented 100% of those who provided solicited feedback from last year's event said they would not hesitate to attend once again and recommended their colleagues do so as well.

The 2010 DMC is hosted by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Missile Defense Agency and will address the conference theme of removing the barriers to “ACHIEVING AN INNOVATIVE, RESPONSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE NATIONAL SECURITY INDUSTRIAL BASE.” All of the military departments, defense agencies, many non-defense agencies, industry and academia will participate in this seminal national event; for both defense and non-defense related manufacturing technology development and application.

budget supplement

NNI Supplement to the President's 2011 Budget As indicated in this document, the total investment by NNI member agencies for 2011 is nearly $1.8 billion for nanotechnology R&D. Among other subjects, the document highlights Nanotechnology Signature Initiatives to accelerate nanotechnology development in support of the President's priorities and innovation strategy. NNI member agencies identified areas for these initiatives ripe for significant advances through close and targeted program-level interagency collaboration.

big things brochure

Nanotechnology is the ability to understand and control matter at the nanoscale or about 1 to 100 nanometers. One nanometer is one billionth of a meter. A sheet of paper is 100-thousand nanometers thick. Materials can have different properties at the nanoscale. Learn more from: "Nanotechnology: Big Things from a Tiny World".
