The Worldwide Cable Set Top Box Market: Challenges and Opportunities

The cable set top box market experienced growth in 2009, once again setting a record for global unit shipments. However, growth slowed significantly last year and 2010 will likely be the first year of negative growth since 2002. Even with the potential for a soft year, the cable set top box market continues to offer solid growth opportunities for cable set top box manufacturers, particularly if they target emerging regional markets or if they focus on high-margin cable set top box product categories.

This report covers the market for cable TV set top boxes, with special emphasis on product manufacturers, market and technology trends, and the semiconductor content of the boxes. It also provides a digital cable set top box Bill of Materials forecast, digital cable set top box manufacturer market shares for 2009, and updates worldwide unit shipment and revenue forecasts through 2014.

The Digital Set Top Box Market: Demand Remains Solid, Despite Threats

After reaching a record high 210 million unit shipments in 2009, worldwide digital set top box unit shipments are projected to decrease slightly in 2010. Although demand is still solid for set top box products, a combination of service provider CAPEX cuts, a significant decrease in digital terrestrial set top box unit shipments, and the lingering malaise of the global recession will likely turn 2010 into just a so-so year for the set top box market.

This PowerPoint presentation provides a comprehensive look at the global digital set top box market. It examines the central position of the set top box in the digital entertainment ecosystem, discusses key trends impacting product development, and examines the growth potential of four digital set top box markets: cable, terrestrial, satellite/DTH, and IPTV. It also provides an aggregated worldwide digital set top box revenue and unit shipment forecast through 2014.

In addition, the presentation indentifies the leading global manufacturers of set top box products, highlights key silicon suppliers for digital set top boxes, and looks at how the set top box market is changing and how it will likely evolve in the near future.

Google TV Announced with Intel, Sony, Logitech, Adobe, Best Buy, and DISH Network

This In-Sight presents In-Stat’s analysis of the Google TV announcement and its partnerships with industry heavyweights including Intel, Sony, Logitech, Adobe and Best Buy. Google has traditionally gone its own way (without partners), but its entry into the OTT (over-the-top) video market signals an understanding that it will need to align itself with others in the ecosystem to succeed. Even so, Google’s success is not guaranteed as competition from incumbents and new entrants is fierce.

This In-Sight includes the following:
- Intel Atom partnerships
- Description of Logitech’s “Buddy Box” and remote control
- DISH Network’s combination of Pay TV with OTT video
- Sony’s plans for embedding Google TV into new TV sets

Worldwide Blu-Ray and DVD Player/Recorder Market

Worldwide DVD and Blu-ray player and recorder unit shipments declined to 137 million units in 2008. In-Stat expects a modest increase in 2009, with a more healthy increase in 2010, spurred by high volume shipments of Blu-ray players. Standard Definition DVD players will decline at a slow but steady rate as consumers opt for Blu-ray for replacement or upgrades in the primary television room. DVD players will continue to ship in areas where HD programming is less accessible including Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia, and for secondary television sets within a household.

In North America, significant price drops of Blu-ray players are driving unit shipments to triple in 2009. With Blu-ray players as low as $99, the price differential between Blu-ray and DVD is shrinking. Blu-ray recorders with hard drives are taking off in Japan, cannibalizing the DVD recorder market, where DVD recorders with hard drives have been popular.

This report contains annual five-year shipment and revenue forecasts for both standard-definition and Blu-ray DVD players and recorders broken down by region. It also contains a complete five-year ASP forecast for Blu-ray DVD player bill-of-materials. DVD silicon suppliers are also profiled.

DTV 2009: Declining Costs, Increasing Shipments, and Network Capability

The market for digital television (DTV) sets is being governed by the switchover from analog to digital broadcasts, the emergence of developing countries as DTV consumers, and the emergence of networking and wireless connectivity options. DTV vendors continue to add networking capability, primarily Ethernet and Wi-Fi, to bring the DTV into the home network, and to maintain its position as the center of the home entertainment cluster. In addition, wireless connectivity options such as 60GHz and WHDI offer the potential for wireless HD streaming in the home.

This PowerPoint presentation looks at marketing and technology factors affecting the DTV market in five different regions: North America, Europe, Japan, Asia/Pacific, and Rest of World. Annual shipment, ASP, and revenue forecasts by TV type (LCD, plasma, CRT, rear projection, and OLED) are provided for each region through 2013. Also included are annual component bill-of-materials forecasts for LCD DTVs, ATSC DTVs, and DVB-T DTVs through 2013.

The Cable Set Top Box Market: After a Record Year in 2008, Slightly Lower Demand in 2009

After a record-setting year in 2008, demand for digital cable set top boxes is leveling off in 2009. Last year, there were just over 46.6 million digital cable set top box unit shipments. Due to cable TV operator spending reductions, in 2009, we are forecasting worldwide unit shipments to decrease by 6%, to just over 44 million.

This report covers the market for cable TV set top boxes, with special emphasis on product manufacturers, market and technology trends, and the semiconductor content of the boxes. It also provides a digital cable set top box Bill of Materials forecast, digital cable set top box manufacturer market shares for 2008, and updates worldwide unit shipment and revenue forecasts through 2013.

Worldwide Digital Satellite Set Top Box Market

This report is part of In-Stat's continuous coverage of the set top box markets. The digital satellite set top box market is the first and largest of the digital set top box markets. Many of the boxes shipping today are more than simple satellite receivers. They have HD decoders, hard drives for digital video recording, and IP connections to access additional content via an IP network.

There are a large number of satellite set top box vendors, some of whom focus on providing boxes to the satellite pay-TV providers while others serve the free-to-air market. Market shares are provided for the top five vendors.

In addition to five-year forecasts for worldwide box unit shipments, ASPs and revenues segmented by region, this report also contains forecasts for SD boxes with hard drives, HD boxes with hard drives, and HD boxes without hard drives. As part of In-Stat's discussion of satellite set top box technology, five-year bill-of-materials forecasts are provided for basic, HD, and DVR boxes along with a semiconductor total available market (TAM) forecast.

Global PC TV Tuners—A Solid Niche In Transition

Demand for PC-TV Tuners has turned down since 2008, due to the worldwide recession. The market faces fundamental issues. People get lots of video from their broadband Internet, and mobile video services will change the playing field.

Digital-only PC-TV Tuners cost less than Hybrid tuners. As developed countries move toward all-digital TV services, the retail value of the total PC-TV Tuner market will slow down, even while unit shipments of Digital-only PC-TV tuner products goes up.

New competitors are moving from cellular handset video markets into the PC-TV Tuner space specializing in very high levels of integration.

PC-TV Tuner vendors are expecting a boost with Microsoft's Windows 7.

Facing flat demand, the traditional vendors are wondering if their PC-TV Tuner business is going to remain viable. As the market shifts from a combination of analog and digital broadcast technologies to digital-only broadcasts, the margins currently available for hybrid tuners will be marginalized by lower cost digital-only tuners.

We expect that the worldwide PC-TV Tuner market may have peaked in value during 2008, at about US$ 1.4 billion. The economic downturn is expected to cause a revenue decline of about 15% during 2009, and we expect single-digit growth for 2010.

The report contains worldwide five-year total unit shipments, units with hard disk drives, HD unit shipments, ASP, and revenue broken down into seven geographic regions. Historical market share data is provided from 2006 to 2008. A bill of materials forecast for an HD IP set top box through 2013 details the components of IP set top boxes.
