Aur (at left in image), located in the Ratak Chain south of Maloelap (centre), is a small atoll composed of three main islands (Tabal, Aur and Bigen) and 39 smaller islets that have a combined area of 5.6 km². They enclose a deep lagoon (depths of over 80 m) with an area of 240 km². There are two main passes connecting the lagoon with the open sea: West Opening and South Opening, as well as a number of smaller, narrower channels.
