Hunter Island

The small Hunter Island lies 75 km east from Matthew Island and 415 km east from the Loyalty Islands. The two islands lie upon a common submarine ridge (that also includes the Vauban Seamount located midway between Hunter and Matthew). Like Matthew Island, Hunter Island is claimed by Vanuatu as part of Tafea province. In 2007 France withdrew its territorial claims over both islands.

The volcanically active Hunter Island is the southernmost emergent feature of the New Hebrides volcanic island arc system. The island rises steeply from the sea as a dome-shaped edifice that reaches a height of 242 m above sea level.
