Humana

13 November 2003 neoclassical | Dwelling's "Humana" features ethereal neo-classical compositions inspired by Portuguese Fado, and these are brought to life by acoustic string instruments and voice without recourse to synths or samplers. Fado is a melancholy traditional song style sometimes referred to as the 'Portuguese Blues'. Dwelling began in 1998 as the solo project of Nuno Roberto who plays guitar, but widened into a band in 2000 and currently includes Caterina Raposo (vocals) as well as a violin, a bass and another guitar player. This release follows the "Moments" MCD (2001).
As highly professional classical musicians catering to a goth-ethereal audience, Dwelling occupy a similar niche to Russia's Caprice, and the sound is not dissimilar in a very broad sense. The vocals and instrumental accompaniment are smooth, faultless and pleasant in a fairly low key sort of way. There are no shocks or sudden surprises, just consistent quality, and interest has to be sought in the different melodies rather than in any changes in musical approach. The last track, 'The Reality That Remains', differs, however, in commencing and closing with a sprightly folk dance, and this is welcome.
