General Dynamics European Land Systems Awarded a Contract for 22 EAGLE Ambulance Vehicles for Germany

VIENNA- General Dynamics European Land Systems was awarded a new contract on April 6th 2011 by the German Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung (BWB) for the delivery of 22 EAGLE BAT (Protected Ambulance Vehicles). The contract is a follow-on order to the 20 EAGLE BAT delivered to the Bundeswehr on 15 March 2011.

This order represents an important endorsement for the protected EAGLE vehicle as it continues to be deployed in international peace support missions by the Republic of Germany and increases the number of EAGLE ordered by the BWB to a total of 495 vehicles.

The 22 newly ordered vehicles will be jointly manufactured by General Dynamics European Land Systemsat its operating sites in Kreuzlingen (General Dynamics European Land Systems-Mowag, Switzerland) and in Kaiserslautern(General Dynamics European Land Systems-Germany).Numerous key components are sourced from various German suppliers. Deliveries will take place at the beginning of 2012.

The well-protected EAGLE Ambulance vehicles will replace existing vehicles of the Bundeswehr, providing increased security to German soldiers on missions abroad. The vehicle accommodates a driver/paramedic, rescue assistant and an emergency doctor and allows patient transport and emergency treatment while protecting occupants from ballistic threats, mines and improvised explosive devices. Due to its high deployability, agility and tactical mobility, the EAGLE is suitable for the entire mission spectrum for this class of vehicles.

In addition to its protection and mobility advantages, the EAGLE also enjoys low operation and training costs. Lifecycle costs of the vehicle fleet will be further minimized by the high degree of logistic commonality with the EAGLE IV GFF 2 class vehicles. The two vehicle types share the essential components.

This order emphasizes the close partnership of BWB as a key customer of General Dynamics European Land Systems and underlines the international success of the highly protected EAGLE, which has demonstrated its protection, reliability and mobility in operations in Afghanistan since 2009.

Facts about the EAGLE

The EAGLE sets the standard for highly protected wheeled vehicles in the weight class of up to 9.5 tons. It has a length of 5.40 m, a height of 2.4 m and a width of 2.16 m. The EAGLE reaches a top speed of 110 km/h on the road and manages gradients of up to 60%. The 245 hp turbocharged diesel engine, in connection with an Allison 5-speed automatic transmission, the unique DeDion axle system with the patented roll stabilizer, the tire pressure control system and the permanent all-wheel drive, give the EAGLE superior on-road and off-road mobility. Thanks to the modular protection system, the EAGLE offers a very high level of protection against ballistic threats, mines, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Furthermore, the vehicle is equipped with an NBC overpressure system.
