The Government of the Balearic Islands will host a conference in Majorca tomorrow (11 November) focused on the importance of tourism for growth and jobs in Europe's regions. The event, to be opened by President Jaume Matas Palou, will bring together Members of the European Parliament, together with representatives of the Committee of the Regions and other EU institutions, the tourist sector and trade unions.

A common feature of tourist destinations is temporary concentration of demand. The reduction of 'seasonality' has become a strategic goal, with the aim of achieving of better use of infrastructure and a greater return on investment in tourism to create more and better jobs - as well as reducing the social costs associated with seasonal unemployment. The colloquium will deal with the following topics:

  • Globalisation, competitiveness and innovation;University-enterprises partnerships;
  • SMEs and innovation;
