A Globally Competitive Team Producing a Globally Competitive Product

The Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chrysler Group LLC that produces a family of fuel-efficient, four-cylinder engines in the global automotive market.

Product:

The "Global Engine" produced at the GEMA facility in Dundee, Michigan is the base four cylinder engine for all Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep applications.  The GEMA Dundee facility produces a family of engines ranging in size from 1.8 to 2.4 liters, including a turbo variant capable in excess of 300 HP.  On September 4th, 2008, GEMA celebrated the production of its 1,000,000th engine – exactly three years since the plant launched in September of 2005.  Starting in the 4th quarter of 2010, GEMA will begin producing the 1.4l 16v FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotized Engine). The FIRE engine is a collaboration between Chrysler Group and Fiat powertrain groups and will include Fiat’s innovative advanced technologies to reduce engine emissions and improve fuel economy.

Process:

GEMA has attracted significant attention within the manufacturing world as a truly innovative lean manufacturing environment - having won several high-profile awards (such as the Harbour Award and the Shingo Prize) as well as having been featured in publications such as Fortune magazine, the New York Times and others (check out our “Media Center” for article links).  In short, the “GEMA Model” as it has come to be known has gained notoriety as a lean business model that shatters the traditional paradigm of US manufacturing.  GEMA has proven that domestic manufacturing can remain truly competitive in a global marketplace while retaining quality, high-paying jobs right here in Michigan.

People:

At the core of our success is the GEMA Team - a highly trained, flexible and empowered workforce that consists of both GEMA employees and Partner team members (from 18 different Integrated Service Providers, or “ISPs”).  Most recently, the Team was awarded with Oliver Wyman’s much-coveted Harbour Award for 2008, which recognized GEMA as the most productive engine plant in North America.
