Iran, G5+1 End Baghdad Talks

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) ended their talks in Baghdad on Thursday after three rounds of serious negotiations.

The talks finished minutes ago after Iran's top negotiator Saeed Jalili and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who leads the delegations of the six world powers in the talks with Iran, ended their third bilateral meeting in Baghdad.

Iran and G5+1 had started a second day of negotiations in Baghdad on Thursday morning.

On the first day of the talks on Wednesday, the two sides held morning session and Iran offered a comprehensive package of step-by-step proposals to the six world powers party to the talks with Tehran.

The Iranian package included five subjects in various fields of nuclear and non-nuclear cooperation.

The Iranian step-by-step proposals offered practical steps to the western sides.

Representatives of the G5+1 were due to express their view about the Iranian package in an evening session, which was originally scheduled for 18:00 Baghdad time (1500 GMT), but was later delayed until this morning.

Neither party explained why the evening session was postponed.

Wednesday was a hectic day of activity for both sides' diplomats. Several bilateral meetings were held after the morning session, including a meeting between Iran's deputy chief negotiator Ali Baqeri and Chinese Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu.

The Chinese delegation then met with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who leads the delegations of the six world powers party to the talks with Iran.

Later in the day, Baqeri attended a bilateral meeting with Ashton's deputy Helga Schmid.

After the meeting with Baqeri, Schmid met with the delegations of the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) to brief them of Iran's views.

Later at Wednesday night and on Thursday morning Iran's top negotiator Saeed Jalili and Ashton attended a bilateral meeting, but similar to the other meetings held in the Iraqi capital on Wednesday, the media were not informed of the agenda of the talks.

In the talks with the representatives of the six world powers, Jalili was accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister for Asian and Pacific Affairs Abbas Araqchi, SNSC Undersecretary Ali Baqeri, Foreign Ministry Advisor Hamid Reza Asgari and former Head of the Foreign Ministry's Office for the Political and International Studies Mostafa Dowlatyar.

The 5+1 members were represented at the talks by Chinese Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, US Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman, Britain's former Ambassador to Iran Geoffrey Adams, Director-General for Political and Security Affairs at the French Foreign Ministry Jacque Audibert and German Deputy Foreign Minister Hans-Dieter Lucas.
