Emergency Escape Systems

One of the main areas of "RD&PE; Zvezda" activities is design, development, manufacture and testing of the emergency escape means for pilots of various air and space vehicles. The great scope of scientific and engineering researches, careful analysis of military aviation accidents defined a new generation ejection seat concept, which was embodied in the Ê-36 ejection seat family in late 60s.

High characteristics and modular design which provides for easy adaptation of the seat to aircraft characteristics, made it possible to use this seat in all modern USSR/Russian aircraft. The seat is mass-produced in 15 versions and installed in Su-17-ÇÌ, Su-24, Su-25, Su-27, Su-37, MiG-29, MiG-31, MiG-AT, Tu-160, Yak-36, Yak-38, etc.

The design features of the seat made it possible, for the first time in aviation, to implement ejection process automatization in take-off and landing modes for Yak-36 and Yak-38 aircraft.

An integrated crew escape and life support system including the K-36DM ejection seat and ÊÊÎ-5/ÊÊÎ-15 protective gears, provides for crew safe escape throughout the equivalent air speed range of 0...1400 km/h, at an altitudes of 0...25 km and M<=3.

On the basis of the Ê-36 ejection seat, the crew emergency escape system for the "Buran" space shuttle including the K-36RB ejection seat and "Strizh" full-pressure suit, was developed and qualified (H<=30 km, M=3).

In the 90s, "Zvezda" ran a profound update of the ejection seat and created the K-36D-3.5 ejection seat having higher technical and ergonomic characteristics which was practically the new generation seat.

In 1992 the Êà-50 helicopter was equipped with a principally new Ê-37 escape system, which pulled the pilot out of the helicopter with a rocket motor.

For the sports and light airplanes, there was developed the SKS-94, the crew emergency escape system. For the first time, the SKS-94 implemented a new escape method, which provided/or maximum escape intensification with minimum weight penalty.
