Cameroon's elite Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) received its first combat aircraft in mid-February when the first of two refurbished Mi-24 attack helicopters arrived from Russia to Douala, where it is currently being assembled, a Cameroonian military source has told IHS Jane's . The second is expected to arrive later this year.
The aircraft were initially expected in early October 2015, a Cameroonian officer told IHS Jane's , but the fitting of new weapon systems and avionics resulted in a delay.
Both aircraft will be based at Maroua and placed under the direct authority of the BIR's Operation Alpha command, which is operating against the Boko Haram militant group in the country's Far North Province.
