FreePPP
By Steve Dagley
The full version of FreePPP 2.6 will be released at the MacWorld Expo in Boston.
FreePPP 2.6 is now in the late Beta stage where, except as noted in the Read Me, the feature set is complete - if it's not already implemented or listed in the Read Me as one of the additional features to be implemented it won't be part of the 2.6 release. Feedback at this point should be on any reproducable problems rather than feature requests. If you've used FreePPP 2.5v2 you should be able to figure it out. If you aren't sure what some setting in FreePPP Setup 2.6 does, make sure to turn on Balloon Help.
What's new/changed in FreePPP 2.6 Beta 7
Changed the expiration logic so expired versions can still be used. Now present an alert at startup that FreePPP has expired and asking the user to get a new version.
Revised (again) the logic FreePPP uses to determine if a connection is active and removed the option to change the check line interval (it's always 20 seconds now). Basically we now check for IP data activity and only send an echo request to the server if there isn't any.
By popular request restored the button in the General tab to open the TCP/IP or MacTCP control panels for those folks that didn't notice the command in the "Stuff" menu.
Fixed a problem in the code to set the serial port speed which apparently only affected PowerBook 1xx series machines with Global Village internal modems.
Several new calls in the FreePPP Public API which have yet to be documented. Besides additional FreePPP control and status info it will be possible to change the active OT TCP/IP configuration using the FreePPP Public API.
