Internet Explorer 4.5 Macintosh Edition

Internet Explorer 4.5 Macintosh Edition is the Web browser that's simple to use, hassle free, and totally built for your Macintosh. Here are some of the NEW features that we built in to save you time while searching the Web:

  • NEW: Page Holder
Screen shot of Page HolderSimilar to the Search pane, the new Page Holder feature allows users to easily navigate content-rich Web sites that contain many links, such as news sites or product information sites. Again, there's no need for users to scroll back through many pages to return to a reference page or to repeatedly click the Back button before drilling down a different set of links. Users simply view a page in the Page Holder tab in the Explorer Bar, and then click links on the page to see the page in the main browser window. If you would like to see only the links, you can toggle on or off the "links only" view inside of Page Holder.

  • NEW: Form AutoFill
Filling out forms on the Internet is a highly repetitive chore that most users face regularly. Form AutoFill is designed to take care of this chore for the user. After filling out a form for the first time or setting personal identification preferences (such as name and address), users simply click this new toolbar button to automatically fill in any form they may encounter on a Web page. Form AutoFill intelligently finds appropriate fields and highlights them after they are filled. This feature is exclusive to Microsoft Internet Explorer Macintosh Edition.

  • NEW: Form AutoComplete
This new feature also helps reduce the need for repetitive typing on Web page forms. Once users have set their personal preferences, they can begin entering information in a field - for example, the first few characters of their fax number - and Form AutoComplete finishes the entry with the remainder of the appropriate word, phrase or number, drawn from the personal preference file set up by the user. Users can accept the automatic entry by pressing the return or tab key or override it by typing other information.

  • NEW: Print Preview
Print Preview menuThis feature makes it easy to get printing right the first time. It gives users powerful new control over print functions, while making printing faster and easier; it also reduces wear and tear on expensive printer cartridges. As in the Microsoft Office applications, Print Preview allows users to see how a Web page will look before issuing the print command. Users have the option to toggle headers and footers, images, and backgrounds on or off, and to select if they want to print the page with or without a wide table or graph ("no cropping" or "cropping" options). This feature is not available in any other Macintosh browsers.

  • NEW: Automatic scaling
Now Internet Explorer 4.5 automatically scales the content of a Web page to fit onto a sheet of paper, without clipping text or images. This feature also makes it easy to print exactly what you want the first time, by minimizing the common problem in which Web pages print out in portions, leaving part of each sheet of paper blank.

  • NEW: Smart backgrounds
Users can now turn off a dark-colored or heavily-textured Web page background to make it easier to read when printed. If the background is turned off, it becomes white and the text is changed to black. Exclusive to Internet Explorer for the Macintosh is the ability to perform this function in the Print Preview window.

  • NEW: Smart page breaks
Internet Explorer now breaks pages around objects, without being constrained to straight lines. This feature eliminates annoying cut-off images, ensuring that a graphic object prints completely on a single page. Also, this feature makes for more economical use of paper, reducing waste.

  • NEW: Drag & Drop Install
Drag & Drop is a revolutionary way to install Internet Explore. Users simply drag the program folder to their hard drive and launch Internet Explorer. There are no confusing questions to answer, and there is no requirement to select which components to install. This feature leverages one of the most popular innovations in Microsoft Office 98. This feature is exclusive to Microsoft Internet Explorer Macintosh Edition.

  • NEW: Self-Repairing Applications
To make it easier than ever for users to manage their software, Internet Explorer 4.5 is designed to be self-maintaining. The browser proactively fixes problems - such as when a user inadvertently deletes a necessary system file - without requiring user intervention. It also performs maintenance tasks to prevent incompatibilities; for example, if users change the name of a hard drive, Internet Explorer updates all necessary files to ensure continued smooth operation. Similar to Drag & Drop Install, this feature uses popular functionality from Microsoft Office 98. This feature is exclusive to Microsoft Internet Explorer Macintosh Edition.

  • NEW: faster performance
Internet Explorer 4.5 launches faster than previous versions and delivers lightning-fast display of previously visited Web pages.

  • NEW: Mac OS 8.5 Sherlock Integration
The Internet Explorer 4.5 interface integrates with Apple's new Mac OS 8.5 Sherlock technology, making the benefits of Sherlock instantly available to users. One click on the Internet Explorer address bar gives users direct access to Sherlock, without having to switch to the Finder first. Users can benefit from Sherlock's ability to search multiple sites and adjust Sherlock's settings so that searches are best suited to their needs. Then, when users go to a Web site, they can use Sherlock to automatically search for sites related to the one they're in. Sherlock can also summarize the text on the current Web page and place it into the clipboard, so users can paste it into another application. This feature is exclusive to Microsoft Internet Explorer Macintosh Edition.

  • NEW: Macintosh Drag & Drop for Images
Now it's easy to save and view images from the Web. Internet Explorer 4.5 allows users to drag and drop images onto the Desktop. The images are automatically saved and displayed in GIF or JPEG format, with a thumbnail preview so they're immediately recognizable. This feature eliminates the need to cut, paste, save and open an image to see what it is.

  • NEW: Appearance Manager support
Internet Explorer 4.5 provides support for the Platinum theme currently shipping with OS 8.5 - as well as for any future themes to be provided by Apple or third parties - so it's more customizable and looks the way applications for the Macintosh should. This feature is exclusive to Microsoft Internet Explorer Macintosh Edition.

  • NEW: Server-gated cryptography
Companies conducting electronic commerce internationally can now use the Internet Explorer server-gated cryptography to support high-encryption sites for the best security. This feature provides encryption of files at the server level, which enables customers to ensure complete security coverage without having to address all possible browser-side configurations. Now, users outside the United States and Canada can access strongly encrypted sites from those countries, making it easier to find information, conduct business and receive services from U.S. and Canadian sites.

  • NEW: TEC 1.4.1
With support for Apple's Text Encoding Converter (TEC) standard, Internet Explorer 4.5 now offers improved support for languages other than English - enabling multilanguage encoding on international Web pages.

  • NEW: Euro currency
Upon its adoption, the new European currency will be supported in all fonts, so that users can see the euro characters inserted by Web page authors. This support will help ensure the seamless exchange of information when users are communicating across international borders.
