Chat Online Using ICQ Or AOL
What you need: a computer, Internet access, free chat service Staying in touch with family and friends is a good idea, and it's an even better one when you don't have to pay a cent to do it. Buddy list software notifies you when designated friends and family members are online and lets you chat (more accuarately known as typing messages in real time) with them. Once you know who is out there, you can type online using short messages that appear on screen, or you can create your own private chat areas. The only complication: You and your pals must use the same chat software. We picked ICQ -- pronounced I seek you -- the most popular Internet-based buddy program; if your friends are already using a buddy list, it's probably ICQ. We've also included brief instructions for the other major buddy list, America Online's Instant Messenger, which you can download free at www.aol.com. It also ships as part of Netscape Navigator. Want a buddy? Just follow these five steps.
