Queen Emeraldas

Intro:

Queen EmeraldasShe is beautiful and scarred, inside and out.  She is alone.  And she is all that stands between freedom and tyranny in the vast ocean of space.

From the classic tales of  Leiji Matsumoto's CAPTAIN HARLOCK and GALAXY EXPRESS 999 emerges Emeraldas in her own series!  This intense character-driven space opera is punctuated with the kind of furious space naval combat Matsumoto pioneered 25 years ago in SPACE CRUISER YAMATO.   In this update of his work, traditional cel animation is blended with 3D computer graphics to bring you sci-fi swashbuckling and ship-to-ship action that will leave you desperately wanting more of QUEEN EMERALDAS!

The Buzz:

Queen EmeraldasInterest is beginning to surge again in the works of Leiji Matsumoto.   1998 was the 20th anniversary of Captain Harlock, and 1999 is the 25th anniversary of Space Cruiser Yamato  (known better to American audiences as Star Blazers) and fans both new and old are revisiting these stories that were so influential to both sci-fi and anime.  Matsumoto has also begun an all-new manga of Galaxy Express 999!  Word has it that this may be his final epic, and that the varied storylines he has crafted throughout his career will finally weave together into a single climax.

In the midst of this excitement comes our modern adaptation of his 1978 manga, Queen Emeraldas.   In this landmark series, Emeraldas is alone at the helm of her phantom pirate starship, the Queen Emeraldas.   Without her friend Harlock or lover Tochiro, she does battle to protect the innocent from the ruthless Arfressian Fleet.

...They should be wary of the woman with nothing left to lose.

The Plot:

Her only love is lost....Can the void of space fill her empty heart?

Her only love is lost.  In his memory, she flies the skull and crossbones on the starship that he built, the starship she calls home.  Let the cruel and the cowards beware . . .

Hiroshi Umino is a brash, young stowaway, with dreams of piloting his own spaceship.  He hides in the cargo bay of a freighter in order to gain passage to Daibaran, where he hopes to mine the energy crystals necessary to build a powerful ship.  Unfortunately for Hiroshi, the Arfress have decided to destroy the freighter he's hidden on.  What's worse is that the "military" goal here seems to be the amusement of Fleet Commander Eldomain.  When the Queen Emeraldas intervenes, Hiroshi is saved, but the Arfress become bent on revenge.

Under orders from Bararuda, the female ruler of the Arfress, Eldomain begins a pattern of harassment around the Daibaran system in order to draw out and identity their elusive nemesis.  Emeraldas readily acknowledges that it was she who stopped the freighter massacre – and then to the amazement of the Daibaran onlookers, walks right into and survives an obvious ambush.  Eldomain, after further humiliation from Bararuda, is forced to resort to trickery.  He kidnaps Hiroshi and a group of innocent civilians, and sets a trap with them as the bait.  His judgment of Emeraldas' values is correct – and she enters the fray for perhaps the final time.

Awesome animated action! The ship-to-ship combat blazes fiercely across space as the Queen Emeraldas struggles to survive the Arfressian Fleet's barrage of attacks.  Can her shields last forever?  Will Hiroshi learn the value of friendship and teamwork in time?

Can a young boy possibly handle one of the legendary laser pistols?  Queen Emeraldas grand return is not to be missed.

Dangerous ladies!
Teeth boy!
