You can have the whole world in the palm of your hand.
Well, maybe not the whole world, but as long as you own a personal digital assistant, also known as a handheld computer, you can fit your calendar, address book, computer games, and even a digital photo album in your fist.
But picking the perfect handheld isn't easy. In the end, it's really a matter of picking the operating system that comes melded with the unit. Palm OS currently runs on the monster share of palmtops (including all Palms, PalmPilots, and Handspring Visors), but it's facing stiff competition from Microsoft's new Pocket PC OS, Windows CE's much improved replacement.
To help you decide, we tested both Palm OS and Microsoft Pocket PC. We put the two OSs through their paces by synchronizing calendars and contact lists, downloading software, and playing games. The result? Although you can create custom menus in Pocket PC, Palm OS's sleek simplicity makes it our favorite palmtop OS.
