Vargas Proposes Emergency Hotline For Schools
Assemblyman Announces Bill In Response To School Shooting
SACRAMENTO, 6:28 p.m. PST March 7, 2001 -- Assemblyman Juan Vargas announced Wednesday a bill to help the growing problem of school violence.
Vargas (pictured, left) proposed that California establish an "800" emergency hotline for students and parents who overhear or fear threats of violence in our school system. Vargas believes such a hotline is a necessity given Monday's tragedy at Santana High School -- Vargas' alma mater -- where reports indicate that the gunman had forewarned classmates and parents of his violent plan. "This horrific tragedy is made worse by the fact that people were warned in advance. If schoolchildren and parents only know where to turn we may have prevented this catastrophe," Vargas stated. Under Vargas' plan, a statewide 24-hour "800" telephone number to assist law enforcement prevent future school violence. Under the plan, callers may elect to remain anonymous. Vargas graduated from Santana High School in 1979 and represents the 79th District, which includes parts of San Diego, Chula Vista and National City.
