San Marcos Student Makes Hit List
List Included Names Of Several Classmates
SAN MARCOS, Calif., 7:12 a.m. PST March 8, 2001 -- Five days before the deadly shooting at Santee's Santana High School, a student at a high school in San Marcos allegedly made a list of people whom he wanted to kill, 10News reported.

School officials said that the 15-year-old freshman admitted making the list, which contained the names of several classmates.

The incident occurred during a class at the North County high school on Feb. 28, when students began discussing the subject of murder. According to students, the boy was involved in the conversation and someone asked him who he would kill.

The boy allegedly responded by making a list on the back of a vocabulary handout. Two students told The San Diego Union-Tribune that the list contained the names of six students, along with the boy's entire gym class.

During the conversation, he allegedly said that he wanted to shoot the kneecaps off his victims and then slit their throats.

One of the students whose name was on the list grabbed it from the boy and handed it to the teacher in the classroom. She then took the teenager to the principal's office.

San Marcos Unified School District Assistant Superintendent Bob Harman said that an investigation into the incident is under way.

Catherine Ingle, whose daughter's name appeared on the boy's list, told the newspaper that she was upset with the way the district is handling the incident. She said that she has removed her daughter from the school out of fear for her safety.

Ingle said that she also told the parents of the other students whose names were on the list when the school district failed to do so.

Harmon admitted that the district has made some mistakes in handling the situation.

"We have done a lot of things right and we have done some things wrong," Harmon told the newspaper. "We have learned from our mistakes."

Harmon indicated that the biggest mistake was probably in not notifying the parents of children whose names were on the list.

School district officials say the investigation is still under way and that the boy, so far, has not been suspended.
