Point Loma Beach Contaminated
Sewage Spill Blamed
SAN DIEGO, 9:53 p.m. PST March 8, 2001 -- Contamination warnings are up at Point Loma after a 400-gallon sewage spill Thursday.
Blockage in a pipe caused wastewater to begin overflowing off San Gorgonio Street, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health. Sewage spilled into a McCall Street storm drain for about 90 minutes. That drain empties into San Diego Bay at the southern end of Shelter Island. The spill prompted the DEH to post pollution advisory signs along a 600- foot section of Kellogg Street Beach. The warning will remain in effect until testing confirms the water in the area is safe again for human contact.
