Weather
Highlight Soaking rains helped extinguish a wildfire in central
Florida allowing U.S. route 1 to reopen yesterday after
being closed much of the week. Despite the welcomed rains
and anticipation of more relief, much of the state
remains drought stricken. Campfires and outdoor cooking
are prohibited in Ocala National Forest to reduce the
wildfire threat. The ban is expected to remain in effect
through August. Weather
Fact Lightning bolts are only a couple of inches in
diameter but can reach temperatures upwards of 50,000
degrees Farenheit. This temperature is 5 times hotter
than the surface of the sun! Air near the lightning bolt
expands rapidly with this sudden release of energy
producing a sound wave, what we hear as thunder. Almanac Today Monthly
