15th Anniversary Birthday Magazine Online From The
Desk Of The Editor In 1986
I said in an interview with the Boston Globe that
"My hope is that The Namibian can outlast the South
Africans. The Namibian
successfully survived the transition from troubled times,
operating in a hostile environment under South African
apartheid rule, to the present where freedom of the press
and speech are guaranteed by the Constitution. Yet it goes
without saying that our democracy remains
fragile. We grew from a
small weekly newspaper, launched with donor funding on
August 30 1985 with a handful of young activists, to promote
self-determination and independence and to expose the evils
of colonialism, to becoming self-sufficient and Namibia's
largest-selling daily. The Namibian was
also the first newspaper in this country to embrace new
media technology. We can now boast having Namibia's biggest
website which, among others, has become indispensable to
Namibians living abroad. Our idea for this
commemorative magazine stems from our belief that newspapers
are here to stay for a long time to come, despite the onset
of new media technologies. Print can still do what others
cannot - including promoting a reading culture as well as
analysing events as they unfold. In this magazine
we take a trip down memory lane to look at the history of
the newspaper and share various other contributions with our
readers. These embrace, among others, a foreword by United
Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, an incisive analysis
of the newspaper since its inception by renowned Namibian
academic Andre du Pisani, as well as articles by reputed
journalists, academics and authors from around the world on
a range of topics. All contributions
have a common thread - that of the importance of press
freedom and an independent press, coupled with literacy, to
the survival of democracy in Africa and elsewhere in the
world. Democracy demands informed choices and we hope we are
able to make a contribution to this process. I take this
opportunity to thank our many staff members, both past and
present, as well as freelancers, who have contributed to
making The Namibian what it is today. We have exciting
plans in store as we endeavour to constantly improve on what
we offer our readers as well as increase our involvement in
communities in terms of social responsibility
projects. I also thank our
readers, advertisers and supporters, in short the people of
this country, who have been with us, through bad times and
good. We wholeheartedly
thank those who have given of their valuable time and
expertise to share articles or extracts of their writings
with Namibians. You have helped make this magazine what it
is. We invite you to
celebrate with us - read and enjoy! Gwen
