Rambam team finds mutant gene cause of rare disease

(September 11) - Researchers at Haifa's Rambam Hospital have discovered a mutant gene that causes a rare disease that leads to balding in infancy followed by incurable blindness in young adulthood. The disease, called hypotrichosis with macular dystrophy, occurs in all populations and is rare.

MDA staffers to begin hunger strike today

(September 11) - Talks between Magen David Adom and the Treasury, mediated by Histadrut Chairman Amir Peretz, broke up last night without result. MDA staffers will begin a hunger strike at 9 a.m. today but continue working, the union announced, without saying exactly how many would participate.

Local researchers applaud US stem cell team successes

(September 5) - Local embryonic stem cell researchers have applauded the achievement of University of Wisconsin scientists who for the first time have turned human embryonic stem cells into blood cells. Although much work remains to be done, the accomplishment is a major step toward producing mini-factories that would create unlimited and safe supplies of red and white blood cells and platelets.
