United Jewish Communities 'praying for attack victims'
By Melissa Radler
NEW YORK (September 12) - The United Jewish Communities, which represents 189 federations across North America, expressed its "shock and disgust at the alleged terrorist attacks against the United States."
"We express our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those lost today," said UJC officials in a statement. "We pray for the recovery of those who were injured, and stand ready to support those seeking physical and emotional healing.
"Furthermore, we condemn those who act with evil and hate toward innocent people, here at home and abroad, and we recommit ourselves to working to eradicate terrorism."
Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, said in a statement that he "mourns with America."
"We extend our profound sympathies to the families and friends of those who have been devastated by these despicable acts of murder. We offer our thanks to the thousands of police officers, firefighters, and paramedics who have risked their lives to save others."
Yoffie called on the community to support the Bush administration's efforts to find those responsible, and urged Americans not to speculate on possible perpetrators until the facts are known.
"The Jewish community is especially sensitive to the scourge of terror," said Yoffie. "The intentional and indiscriminate killing of innocent human beings is an act of ultimate evil, a profound offense against God and humanity for which there can never be a rationale or justification."
"After today, we know that our lives in America will never be the same. In ways large and small, our world has irreparably changed," said Yoffie. "But we believe too in the resiliency of the American people, and that we will not permit these horrific acts of terror to dictate the character of American society.
"Our tradition teaches us the reality of evil but reminds us, too, of our ability to overcome evil, to affirm hope, and to achieve healing."
