Gunmen kill two border policemen JERUSALEM (September 12) - Two border policemen were killed and a third wounded shortly after midnight yesterday when Palestinian gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons at their base, just inside the Green Line near Kibbutz Magal, north of Tulkarm. St.-Sgt. Andre Zledkin, 26, of Karmiel, and Sgt. Tzahi David, 19, of Tel Aviv, were each shot in the head as they patrolled inside the security fence of the base near the entrance gate. The third border policeman, Aharon Ratson, was taken to Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera with a gunshot wound in the hand. The Fatah-affiliated Popular Army Front-Return Battalions claimed responsibility for the attack in a fax sent to the Agence France Presse in Beirut, saying it was in response to Israel's "assassination policy." The attack occurred near last Thursday's shooting attack which killed IDF Lt. Erez Merhavi, 21, and seriously wounded Lt. Limor Vishnia, 21, as they drove in their vehicle near Kibbutz Bahan. Security forces said it is possible the same terrorist cell is responsible for both attacks. Later in the day Palestinian gunmen in Yabed shot a 53-year-old Bezeq worker in the arm at the Shahak industrial zone east of Shaked. The man, a resident of Hadera, was taken to Hillel Yaffe Hospital where doctors extricated the bullet from his arm. Shortly afterward two soldiers conducting searches east of Shaked were lightly wounded when Palestinians detonated two bombs near them. The two were treated at a local army clinic. Speaking to reporters about the fatal shooting at the base near Tulkarm, OC Border Police Cmdr. Ya'acov Ganot said bulldozers would clear the dense shrubs and trees that surround the base, noting that requests to do so in the past had been denied and that Monday night's attack might have been avoided had the border policemen had a clear view of their attackers. As the base is situated inside Israel, the border policemen are not required to wear helmets on duty. Ganot said the terrorists monitored the patrol's movements and waited until the policemen reached the gate and shot them in the head. Ratson, despite his wound, and another border policeman shot at the perpetrators and alerted the base. "Their actions were immediate, professional, and determined," Ganot said. The densely wooded area hampered search attempts, which included tracker dogs and flares. David was buried in the Border Police section of the Kiryat Shaul Military Cemetery yesterday at noon and Zledkin was buried early yesterday evening in the military section of the Karmiel Cemetery. Last night Palestinians shot at an IDF patrol near Nahal Ginat north of Jenin, and soldiers returned fire with tank shells and light weapons. Earlier, Palestinians shot at an IDF post at Tel Aras near Nablus. In the Gaza Strip, Palestinians threw three grenades and fired shots at an IDF post on the border with Egypt. In response to the firing of two mortar shells early yesterday morning at soldiers operating near the border fence in the northern Gaza Strip, APCs penetrated several hundred meters into the Palestinian-controlled area nearby and searched it before leaving. Early yesterday, IDF and additional security forces shut down Palestinian security headquarters in Eizariya and Abu Dis, which the army said were used to plan and send terrorists to perpetrate attacks against Israel. The offices are in areas under Israel's security control or total control. In Eizariya the General Intelligence headquarters, the West Preventive Security office, and a Palestinian Police office were shut down, and in Abu Dis the offices belonging to the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine were closed. The Palestinians accuse Israel of trying to cut off Jerusalem from the West Bank and said that, apart from army roadblocks set up at the entrances to the villages, soldiers were digging deep trenches around the villages to prevent residents from leaving. In Hebron overnight, paratroopers shot and wounded three armed terrorists they spotted in Abu Sneineh who were on the verge of shooting at Jewish homes, the IDF Spokesman said. Palestinians later said one of the wounded was the son of the PA Transport Minister Talal Sadar and the other two Palestinian policemen. Previous Next News
