2002 White House Tee Ball (May 5, 2002)

Mr. Ripken is serving as the honorary commissioner of the White House T-ball League. President George W. Bush and Cal Ripken stand for the singing of the national anthem during the opening ceremony of the first game of the White House Tee Ball season Sunday, May 5. Mr. Ripken is serving as the honorary commissioner of the White House T-ball League. The Uniondale Little League Sluggers of Uniondale, N.Y., battled for bases with the 6&11 Little League Sluggers from Trenton, N. J., on a quiet, sunny corner of the White House South Lawn.
President George W. Bush and Commissioner Cal Ripken watch the game with team families. In addition to moms and dads, Arizona Diamondback Erubiel Durazo, and Major League Baseball Hall of Famers Tony Perez and Orlando Cepeda came to root for the two teams. President George W. Bush and Commissioner Cal Ripken signal a "safe" for a player who took an unplanned slide as he ran toward them for his courtesy baseball and photo after the game. Each player received a baseball signed by President Bush and Commissioner Ripken. By the end of the day, many of the souvenir balls had been taken out of their stately Navy blue boxes and were marked with grass stains received from playing catch.
