Vice President For Development

The Cato Institute seeks to hire a vice president for development, with overall responsibility for the Institute's fundraising efforts. This will involve developing and carrying out a development strategy, including direct mail, corporate and foundation relations, and individual donor solicitation and relations. The vice president will report directly to the president and will work closely with the director of external affairs, who functions as a COO of the department, and with the Institute's directors of public policy, communications, and legislative liaison. Communications, management, and leadership skills are essential, along with a commitment to the philosophy of liberty and limited government. The vice president directs a staff of 8. Salary will be commensurate with experience and ability.

Welfare Policy Analyst

The Cato Institute seeks a research assistant/policy analyst for welfare policy. The position entails research; and writing, editing policy studies and articles, and assisting the director of health and welfare studies. The position will involve work on such issues as welfare reform, public housing, and anti-poverty programs, as well as private alternatives for assisting the poor. An ideal candidate will have expertise in social welfare policy. A B.S. or B.A. degree is required, but a Masters' degree and working experience in the area of expertise is preferable. The candidate should be a well-spoken professional representative of Cato and committed to promoting public policies consistent with individual liberty, limited government, and free markets. Compensation commensurate with experience.

Director, Media Relations

The Cato Institute seeks a Director of Media Relations who can provide leadership to a talented and growing department. The candidate must have executive experience in the newsroom or in public relations, and an ability to provide strategic advice, counsel, and creativity to public policy issues. Must be able to manage and inspire staff. Solid editorial skills are essential. Candidates must have a commitment to individual liberty, limited government and free markets. Media Manager

The Cato Institute seeks a Media Manager for its media relations department. Managers prepare written materials, devise strategies and contact members of the working press for coverage. Candidates must have solid writing skills and experience in either journalism or public relations. Familiarity with news organizations and public affairs experience are preferable. Candidates should have a commitment to free markets, limited government and individual liberty.

Intern

The Cato Institute is seeking interns for the summer, fall and spring terms. Responsibilities include research assistance to Cato's policy directors, assisting at Cato events, some clerical chores, attendance at Cato events, and weekly seminars and readings. Candidates should be undergraduates, regardless of major, recent graduates, or graduate students who have a strong commitment to individual liberty, private property, free markets, peace, toleration, and limited government. Cato Calls for Papers

The Cato Institute seeks papers and proposals on a wide range of policy issues. The Institute's publications include books, the Cato Journal, Regulation magazine, Cato Policy Report, and the Policy Analysis, Briefing Papers, Foreign Policy Briefings, and Social Security Privatization series.

Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced, preferably in 12-pitch or pica, on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Leave extra space around the title and byline. Margins on all four sides of the page should be at least 1 inch.

Footnotes should be done per the Chicago Manual of Style (Style A). They may be typed at the bottom of each page or preferably at the end of the manuscript. Footnotes should be double-spaced.

Disks may be submitted along with (but not instead of) hard copy. Cato uses MS-Word software but can accept documents in WordPerfect or ASCII.
