News and Updates

Sherlock 3 Channel SDK Available
In Mac OS X 10.2, Sherlock introduces channels which provide Web services for the rest of us. Sherlock 3 uses a new model for channels that provides developers with more flexibility in how data is displayed and organized by providing a front-end interface for a Web-based search engine and full control over how search results are displayed using Aqua. Everything required to develop a channel is provided in the Sherlock Channel SDK including technical documentation, a sample channel, a Project Builder template, and an Interface Builder Sherlock palette. October 2002 Developer Tools Patch Available
This patch fixes a bug in the August 2002 Developer Tools Update. It reverts the nibtool to the version supplied in Mac OS X v10.2 Developer Tools, which was released July 2002. (Users who didn't install the August 2002 Update won't need this reversion patch.) [Oct 30 2002]

O'Reilly Releases New Titles in Mac OS X Series
Newest titles in the O'Reilly collection of technical books for Mac OS X developers include Learning Cocoa with Objective C and Mac OS X for Unix Geeks. These have been reviewed by Apple engineers and are recommended by the Apple Developer Connection. Also see the O'Reilly Network site Mac DevCenter for news and features for Macintosh developers. Jaguar Open Source Update
Three major Open Source updates based on Mac OS X v10.2 "Jaguar" are now available: a Darwin 6.0.1 operating system release, several new Open Directory plug-ins, and the first Open Source release of Rendezvous source code. These releases underscore Apple's commitment to distributing core protocols in a manner compatible with true Open Source practices. [Sept 27 2002]

Icon Kit Added to Mac OS X User Experience Web Site
Apple's User Experience web site has been revised completely to include updated documentation, explanations, and sample code. Of particular interest is the Jaguar version of the Aqua Human Interface Guidelines, a white paper on moving an application from Windows to Mac OS X, a collection of Aqua success stories, and an Icon Design Kit providing sample Photoshop files of common icons. Free Mac OS X Developer Tools
Mac OS X includes a complete suite of professional-quality developer tools. Registered developers can download for free the latest version of the Mac OS X Developer Tools from the Apple Developer Connection Member Site. The suite of tools includes:
  • Project Builder, Apple's integrated development environment for Mac OS X;
  • Interface Builder, Apple's graphical user interface editor;
  • popular Unix development tools such as gcc, gdb, vi, emacs, pico, Perl, PHP, and Python;
