Buyer's alert: The price of wide-screen
Sure, wide-screen TVs look great for movies, but you'll get as much screen for your buck with a nonwide-screen direct-view model. A 36-inch set has a letterboxed image that's 33 inches diagonally, only an inch smaller than a costlier 34-inch wide screen.

KaZaa strikes back
Sharman Networks, owner of the popular KaZaa file-swapping software, has launched a legal counterstrike against the major record labels and Hollywood studios, asserting that they have "obscenely" abused their copyright powers.

AMD chips get
a speed boost

A new specification for a high-speed chip-connection technology could more than triple the bandwidth for data, which could greatly increase the performance and versatility of servers or desktops. HyperTransport 2.0 will provide data transfers between chips at 20 to 40 gigabytes per second.

How did Slammer
slam so hard?

Up there with the Code Red and Nimda worms, Sapphire--also known as Slammer--wreaked havoc on corporate networks. But who's to blame? While the worm exploited a flaw in Microsoft SQL Server, a patch had been available for half a year, which calls administrators on the carpet.

RIAA gets hacked again
Perhaps in response to last week's RIAA victory over Verizon--which would allow the trade group to subpoena P2P user info directly from ISPs--hackers have once again disabled the Web site of the Recording Industry Association of America. The attack has caused the site to be down for three days.

Pentium prices ready
to take the fall

Looking to pick up a 3GHz desktop for less? Intel is planning to cut prices for desktop Pentium 4 chips, including the top-of-the-line 3.06GHz Pentium 4, for late February. The cuts will range from about $25 to $50.
