8 television channels

10 radio networks

More than 50 local services

What your licence provides

The TV licence pays for a wide range of services:

Eight BBC television channels
Ten BBC radio networks
More than fifty local BBC services
High-quality local and national news, debate, documentaries, live music, original drama and entertainment
Childrens' programmes, educational and interactive services, orchestras, concerts, minority language programmes, social action campaigns
Training and support for British production skills and talent in music, drama, film, radio and television

The BBC's public services are available to all, free of adverts and independent of commercial or political interests. Other BBC services are not financed by the licence fee, including World Service. Profits from separate commercial activities keep the licence fee down.

The TV licence costs under £10 per month per household. This is about 32p each day, or around 12p for everyone in the UK. It is free if you are over 75, half-price if you are registered blind.

Paying your licence

The annual colour TV licence currently costs £116. You can pay in instalments if you prefer. A black and white TV licence is £38-50. There is no radio licence.

Concessions apply if you are over 75 or registered blind, and other regulations govern second homes, multiple occupancies, students or special situations.
