Real win Super Cup

Real Madrid 3-1 Feyenoord

European champions Real Madrid won the European Super Cup for the first time on Friday, beating Uefa Cup holders Feyenoord 3-1 with a superb display of attacking football in Monaco.

Real dominated the traditional curtain-raiser to the new European season, taking control of the game with two superbly-worked goals in the space of seven first-half minutes.

" They are known to be the best team in the world, and tonight they proved it "
Feyenoord coach Bert Van Marwijk

The first came in the 14th minute after Zinedine Zidane started a flowing move on halfway.

The ball founds its way to Roberto Carlos and he drilled in a cross which ended with Patrick Paauwe turning the ball into his own net.

Seven minutes later Roberto Carlos made it 2-0 with an unstoppable curling shot after exchanging passes with Esteban Cambiasso.

Feyenoord briefly put Real under some pressure when Pierre van Hooijdonk scored a superb free-kick after 56 minutes to make it 2-1.

" It is nice to take this trophy home for the first time "
Real Madrid boss Vicente Del Bosque

But Real quickly re-established their two-goal lead when Guti, unmarked at the far post, headed home a Luis Figo cross five minutes later.
