NEWS RELEASE 28/02/2003

Theft From Vehicles - Warning

Motorists are being warned to be extra vigilant following a series of thefts from cars in the south of the county since January.

Two patterns of crime have emerged, both occurring in car parks, and either involving the theft of laptop computers or handbags. So far around 30 computers have been stolen, and an average of 10 handbags a week are being snatched from Luton, Dunstable and Toddington Services.

The laptops are being stolen from cars parked in retail or hotel car parks. Thieves are not only stealing computers left openly on display but also those tucked away in the boot of cars.

The handbags are being stolen from vehicles parked in supermarket car parks. Around 10 a week are being stolen as customers load their shopping. It appears women are leaving their handbag on the passenger seat while they put the shopping in the boot. In the meantime the offender has snatched the bag from the front of the car.

Detective Sergeant Stuart Tapping, from Luton CID, said: “Sadly these are all opportunist crimes that could be prevented if people were a little bit more vigilant and careful with their property. Our advise is not to leave anything of value in your car at all, even if you think it is well hidden. And if you’re loading or unloading your car at anytime or place, please keep all personal possessions on you and if possible, out of sight.”

Police believe two men are responsible for the handbag thefts and described them as a dark skinned man and a young looking white youth.

Anyone with information about who may be committing these crimes should contact DS Tapping at Luton CID on 01582 394169, or Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
