NEWS RELEASE 13/03/2003

Guns Discovered

Bedford detectives are appealing for help in finding information on two handguns which have been discovered during roadworks in Willington.

Workmen digging up the A603 last week discovered the guns which had been wrapped in newspaper and buried in a small plastic lunchbox.

Since then, officers have been searching records and doing other enquiries to try to discover the origin of the guns, but so far to no avail. They are now appealing for help in finding out how they found their way to the side of the A603.

One gun is a small black Webley Police 8mm gun made in Italy, the other is a Russian pistol with a brown handle, inscribed with Russian writing and a star.

With the guns were found 50 9mm Parabellum bullets of Lellier and Bellot makes. In addition there were 50 9mm military style bullets.

The newspaper wrapping dates from September 1995.

DC Barry Onwuchekwa is looking for information on the guns, and can be contacted on 01234 275354.
