Sex-driven society won't let sleeping blogs lie
'Internet sex scandal rocks U.S. Congress." -- Tuesday headline in Japan Today. In the span of a few short weeks, Jessica Cutler went from Washington nobody to semi-famous sex scandal starlet.

Plot in 'Day After Tomorrow' is the movie's real disaster
Memo to all the environmental activists who are relying on "The Day After Tomorrow" to serve as a wake-up call about global warming: You might want to see the movie first. It's really quite silly.
Time to place your bets for Daley vs. Blago
Let's say you're a Chicago resident and you woke up on this Wednesday morning in the mood to make a bet or two. What a shame we don't have casino gambling in the city. Wouldn't it be great if you could hop on the CTA or take a quick cab ride to a casino within the Chicago city limits? Some neon-splashed palace with a name like "Daley's Double Horseshoe Casino"? (I can see the marquee now, with "LOUIE ANDERSON" and "ULTIMATE KICKBOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS" in gigantic letters. Let's get comped!)

Being a movie critic means enduring more than 'Gigli'
Longtime, short-time and medium-time readers of this column know I don't do gratuitous plugs, but I have to say that Edwardo's Pizza has perhaps the most dedicated delivery person in Chicago.

Ryan pulling back Obama's stalker, but not far enough
Eight columns for the price of one: Is there anyone who wasn't creeped out by the story about the guy from the Jack Ryan campaign who's following state Sen. Barack Obama with a hand-held video camera? Even when you're running for the U.S. Senate, you should not have to contend with a mope who stalks you all the way to the bathroom door. And if anyone should be sensitive to the privacy rights of political candidates, it should be Ryan, who wants his divorce records to remain sealed.

A night to remember -- songs you may try to forget
In May of 1991, I took note of a rather curious trend in prom themes among Chicago area high schools. Potentially theme-friendly pop hits of the late 1980s and very early 1990s included "I Remember You" by Skid Row; "Here and Now" by Luther Vandross; "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong; "One Moment in Time" by Whitney Houston; "Two Hearts" by Phil Collins, and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" by Janet Jackson -- but the most popular prom song in 1991 was a wimpy ballad by Eric Clapton from 1978 that was never even a Top 10 hit:

Patriotism has long been an Olympic event
Some self-appointed sports purists say the Olympic Games should be devoid of political statements -- or even the acknowledgment of international tensions.

Daley's wartime gift up for auction
Between May of 1971 and March of 1972, the corner of State and Madison was just outside Danang, Vietnam. At least that's what the sign said.

Frasier, we're listening!
Dr. Frasier Crane arrived in Chicago about four days ago. You might have spotted him in O'Hare, chatting with Jennifer Beals.

News media didn't give short shrift to beheading You go first. In a recent column you brought out the big guns, God and the Vatican, to condemn Rush Limbaugh for his support of the troops in the so-called Iraqi prisoner abuse. Who you gonna call on now to comment on the televised beheading of an American civilian -- the liberal high authority Michael "Freaky" Moore? Let's just see if this cold-blooded murder gets as much air time from the media as the naked butts of Iraqi prisoners.

The news is different when women are involved
With the possible exception of the late Pat Tillman, who was a well-known pro football player when he joined the Army, the two most famous American soldiers to emerge from the war in Iraq are women: Jessica Lynch and Lynndie England.

Real cities shouldn't look to Vegas for inspiration
Just when we thought the casino issue was dead in the water, sources say it's "just a matter of time" before gambling comes to Chicago. Mayor Daley simply loves the idea of casino gambling in Chicago. Try to talk to him about the pitfalls and he's like a little kid who doesn't want to hear it, covering his ears and saying, "Jobs jobs jobs jobs jobs jobs, la la la la la la la..."

Wrigleyville to Paris Hilton to Iraq -- by the numbers
Your penny, my thoughts. That means the rest of the paper is free. 1. One day after my column about an anti-South Side Web site video that includes a vignette in which a Sox fan nabs a home run ball by opening fire, there was a real-life shooting after a Chicago baseball game.
