THIS IS A DIFFICULT and emotional time in this writer's life. The loss of my mom, dad and Kup last year, as well as other cherished friends, is a reminder of how precious and short life can be. Now I am writing about a very special friend, and her name is Launa.

THE SCOOP: Rev. Michael Pfleger is mad, and you can bank on it: St. Sabina Church's feisty leader and a large group of his parishioners will picket at noon today at the Bank One branch at 8151 S. Cottage Grove to demand the bank change a policy that he considers to be racist. Pfleger is asking that the bank sign or signs that display a red circle with a slash mark across a gun be removed, as well as the metal detectors and double-locked entry and exit doors.

JUNE 12 MARKS the 10th anniversary of the Nicole Brown Simpson/Ron Goldman murders, in which the accused, O.J. Simpson, was acquitted. "Entertainment Tonight's" Bob Goen snared an exclusive interview with one of the prosecuting attorneys on that case, Marcia Clark, who is now a special legal correspondent for ''ET'' and has not said much about the controversial case since her 1997 book, Without a Doubt. The interview airs this evening, and Clark had this to say about The Juice:

GOOD NEWS: OPRAH just announced a $1 million gift to the legendary Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to establish the Oprah Winfrey Foundation Scholars Program earmarked for the Ailey School. That is so wonderful, and this news couldn't have come at a better time because dancer Chris Jackson, a Chicago Academy for the Arts' 2002 graduate, has just earned a spot in the big leagues by being accepted into Alvin Ailey's main touring company.

WBBM-CHANNEL 2's big boss, Joe Ahern, and wife Susan hosted an elegant and lively dinner party at the beautiful Riva eatery at Navy Pier last Thursday. The evening was in honor of "The Early Show" co-host Harry Smith and sprightly weatherman Dave Price, who originated their CBS show the next day from the pier.
