The United States Army Military District of Washington’s Twilight Tattoo program presents those credentials regularly to the American public through the spring and summer months. Like soldiers throughout the Army, they are the backbone of any Army community relations program.

The 2002 national Memorial Day Observance took place May 27 at Arlington National Cemetery. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz placed the presidential wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at 11 a.m. The Coast Guard Band played for the program that followed at Memorial Amphitheater with Wolfowitz providing the main address.

"Now we face another hour of great testing," Wolfowitz said. "And yes, liberty, our way of life is once again in peril. And we remind ourselves once more who we are, what we stand for, and what we are fighting for." Full text.

2002 High School Journalism Conference

The goal of the 2002 U.S. Army Military District of Washington High School Journalism Conference is provide a high school journalism conference to Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Central Maryland area students where they can learn about the Army’s Journalism Program, the civilian media’s role in support of the Army, and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington.

This year’s program will be presented on the Ellipse, Washington, D.C., April 17 through July 17, and on the south side of the Washington Monument, July 24 and July 31. The U.S. Army Band, "Pershing's Own", celebrated its 80th year of existence with a multi-faceted show at DAR Constitution Hall Friday, March 1. The show featured performances by all of the band's performing units: Herald Trumpets, Ceremonial Band, Army Chorus, Brass Quintet, Army Strings, Army Blues jazz ensemble, Chorale and the Concert Band.

Twilight Tattoo, MDW's colorful summertime pageant, is being marked this year with images from most of the shows taking place this summer, March 2 to Aug. 15. The shows are an hour long and among the venues is the White House Ellipse, where every Wednesday the 3rd U.S. Infantry Salute Gun Battery begins the hour-long show with a 7 p.m. cannon blast. If you've been to a Tattoo, and your performance is not yet listed, come back again soon. We're adding images on a frequent basis!

The members of the United States Army Band, "Pershing's Own," presented the band's 79th anniversary concert the evening of March 24 in the Concert Hall of the Kennedy Center. Sgt. Ashley Nocks was there to capture some of the images.

Pershing's Own fills Constitution Hall with the sound of Christmas 2000 as it performs its finale number "O Come All Ye Faithful" at the Dec. 9, 2000, premiere of "A Holiday Festival." Special guest artist Phylicia Rashad joined the band for holiday selections new and old.

Spirit of America performance

The  performances were seen by 60,000 audience members over its five-day run at the MCI Center in downtown Washington, D.C. The show required the dedicated participation of approximately 400 soldiers, most of whom were from the 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard).

"Spirit of America," which is a musical tour of United States history as told through the eyes of American soldiers, appears June 14-18. The two-hour extravaganza showcases performances by The U.S. Army Band "Pershing’s Own," The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, The Army Drill Team, The Caisson Platoon of the 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), and the 82nd Airborne Division All-American Chorus. This historical pageant celebrates the 225th birthday of the U.S. Army.
