The U.S. Army Military District of Washington
Guardian of the Nation's Capital banner

Who We Are

Welcome to the U.S. Army Military District of Washington Web site. MDW is a multifaceted command with responsibilities focused primarily in the National Capital Region, but whose missions and vision extend nationwide.

The most serious mission of the command is reflected in our informal nickname, “Guardian of the Nation’s Capital.” Carrying this commitment forward links MDW with its sister services, the United States Northern Command and civilian agency counterparts to provide a strengthened shield and a responsive capability in times of national or local emergency.

The nation and the Army have entrusted other key missions to MDW as well. We are in the public eye as the visible manifestation of the Army, and hence the nation, at ceremonies and performances to which the American and world public is often witness.

In these public Web pages we hope to give you a better understanding of our commitment to the American people, the Army values and to the Soldiers Creed. It should serve your needs by helping you find what you are looking for and expedite your interactions with us.

We are headquartered at Fort Leslie J. McNair in the District of Columbia. Our mailing address is:

Headquarters, U.S. Army Military District of Washington
103 Third Avenue
Fort Lesley J. McNair, D.C. 20319-5058

Our footprint extends to and beyond five additional installations. These installations, fall under the Northeast Regional Office of the Installation Management Activity. They support MDW’s missions and the Commanding General, MDW, who as senior mission commander, has oversight of their activities, including service to more than 200 tenant agencies. From south to north, the installations are:

· Fort A.P. Hill, Va.
· Fort Belvoir, Va.
· Fort Myer, Va. (which with Fort McNair is the Fort Myer Military Community)
· Fort Meade, Md.
· Fort Hamilton, N.Y.

The commanding general of MDW is Maj. Gen. Galen B. Jackman. The command sergeant major of MDW is Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey L. Greer.

The commanding general’s staff is organized along traditional staff lines, G1 through G8, with the addition of directorates or offices for Ceremonies and Special Events, Provost Marshal, Public Affairs, Inspector General, Staff Judge Advocate, Chaplain, Civilian Personnel, Safety Office, Equal Opportunity, Equal Employment Opportunity, Staff Medical Advisor, and Internal Review. The command group is augmented by a deputy to the commander for installation support, the chief of staff, the Office of the Secretary of the General Staff, and a liaison office of the Army Contracting Activity.
