[ Monday, Oct. 11, 2004 ] Politicians may vie for the young vote, but few campaigns focus solely on it. Less than a month before the Nov. 2 election, Pennsylvania adopted a law Friday ensuring that the commonwealth would automatically conduct a recount in the event of a close vote. While the dull gray sky of early morning threatened to rain on the soccer fields of the 2004 Mini World Cup, it could do very little to dampen the spirits of the competing teams. Despite the cold winds and dark clouds, about 120 runners gathered yesterday for the 14th Knights of Columbus 5K Race to benefit the Schlow Memorial Library children's department and the Tom Kleban Recovery Fund. For most people attending the women's soccer game, it was just another win for the Lady Lions; but for the children of The Second Mile, it was an opportunity that will always be remembered. While she attended her first political march at Kent State during the controversial shooting incident in 1970, Karen Deutsch replaced her quiet nature with political activism. Though National Coming Out Day will be celebrated across the country today, those in Penn State's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community will postpone their celebration until Homecoming weekend.
