No plan to bring law to enact quota, says SibalAdd to Clippings

TIMES NEWS NETWORK
[ MONDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2004 04:37:24 AM ]
PUNE: Union minister for science and technology and Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Monday clarified that the Union government had no intention to enact a legislation providing job reservations in the private sector.

Criticising Leader of Opposition L K Advani, who had accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of making confusing statement the issue, Sibal clarified that PM had never said that government was planning to enact a law to this effect. "Advani knows both English and Hindi and I do not know which statement of PM Manmohan Singh has confused him. The PM had never said that the government was planning to enact any law in this regards," he said.

Significantly, Sibal is one of the members of the committee, headed by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, constituted to frame a national policy on job reservations in private sector. Asked to comment on PM's statement that a committee had been formed to look into this matter, he said, "Does this mean that we are planning a law?"

"The brief given to me is to frame a policy which will encourage private sector to take up social responsibilities. We do not plan to enact any law," he said.
