Chances are that Jane Austen is turning in her grave -
either because she is deliriously happy or terribly distressed at Gurinder
Chadha's adaptation of
Pride and
Prejudice
.
It's all a matter of perception. For
Bride and Prejudice
is a full Bollywood
thali
- complete with
achar, papad
and
gulab jamun
, which should actually
impress the
angrez
audience, more than
us
desis
, who have grown up on a diet
of sagas about
sagais
,
shaadis
, joint families and geometric
love.
By the way, if you are looking for a serious review of
Chadha's masala meal then this ain't the right place. However, I was at the
premiere!
For starters, the film begins with how Aishwarya Rai meets
Martin Henderson at a Punjabi engagement ceremony - where they play Gujarati
dandiya
. He is a Kiwi, who speaks with
an American accent. She is an Indian who also speaks with an American accent. So
they look made for each other.
That apart, he also has the
expression of somebody who has just learnt trigonometry but has no idea where to
use it! So he goes about the entire film trying to figure out the sin, cos and
tan of his love life. But it's hate at first sight.
