Field hockey upsets Temple, N. Carolina

Collegian Staff Writer

There was more than one huge upset this weekend in Happy Valley, as the Penn State field hockey team continued its winning ways.

The Nittany Lions capped off a successful two-game weekend with a 3-0 victory over the Temple Owls on Friday, and 2-1 win over the Tar Heels of North Carolina yesterday at Bigler Field.

With the win against North Carolina, Penn State has now won 10 consecutive non-conference games.

"It's huge to win these tough out-of-conference games," said Penn State field hockey coach Charlene Morett. "We need to get these non-conference wins before we start a tough, tough conference schedule."

Going into the game, North Carolina was ranked No. 6 in the coaches' poll, while Penn State was No. 12.

Throughout the midday downpour, the Lions were able to capitalize on the few chances at goal they had, and came away with two scores.

Sophomore standout Amanda Eckert scored the first goal with about 15 minutes remaining in the first half.

Eckert was able to deposit the ball in the back of the cage through high traffic in front of the Tar Heels' goal.

"We were really pumped, to start with," she said. "We were really looking forward to this game, and we were ready."

Shortly thereafter, the power went out at Bigler Field, shutting off the scoreboard, which caused a brief delay in the action.

However, the power outage was not enough to distract from the play of the game, as Penn State utilized a questionable penalty corner to make the score 2-0, after a solid shot from Heather Conroy.

Penn State's Jill Martz takes the ball down the field against Temple. They beat the Owls in their game Friday afternoon.

Jill Martz set the ball for Conroy, but faked out a defender by keeping it herself.

After drawing the defense away from Conroy, Martz finessed a pass over to Conroy who smashed a shot into the back of the cage, catching the North Carolina goalie off-guard.

"This is great to get a big win in so early in the season," Conroy said. "We're off to a great start."

The Tar Heels' lone goal came with 2:52 remaining in the second half after a brief defensive lapse by the Lions.

"I think we would really like to keep the ball in our position a little bit longer," Morett said. "We're an attacking team. One of our biggest assets is that we are in great shape."

The win yesterday was fueled by Friday's defeat of Temple.

After the first half, the Lions were up 3-0, but were unable to score another goal in the second half.

Timarie Legel, Conroy and Martz scored for the Lions Friday.

Lackluster and lazy play was the cause of the second-half shutout, according to Morett.

"I felt that we just got complacent," she said. "I felt that we just didn't really play our passing game. We talked about that even at half time, so it was a little disconcerting that we just didn't get back on their game."
