Support the Lesbian and Gay Equality Project

The Equality project works towards achieving full legal and social equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people in South Africa – within the context of equality for all. We do this in various ways: advocacy, public education, policy and legal reform, strategic/impact litigation and the provision of access to justice. As is a non-profit organisation, registered with the Department of Social Development , we depend on grants and donations for our funding. Volunteers also play a significant role in our work.

Become a Friend of Equality and support us in our work!

Keep informed and inform others

The first way to support us is to keep informed about issues affecting the LGBTI community in South Africa and globally. Visit our website regularly, send us an email or give us a call. Also, inform others about our work, our organisation and the challenges faced by our community.

Financial support

Challenging discriminatory practices in Court, public education and providing access to justice are not inexpensive programs, for instance, the cost of mounting a Constitutional Court challenge can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of rand. Public education and advocacy are also long term projects, which we need to spend on the consistently for some time, this makes it essential for us to maintain a steady income.

See our audited financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2002.

We appreciate every donation, however small, and especially encourage regular donations. We also gladly assist those who wish to provide for our important work in their wills.

Donations can be made by cheque, in favour of “The Lesbian and Gay Equality Project” or via electronic transfer (or debit order) into our fund-raising account:

Bank: Nedbank
Account number: 1979 367 809
Branch: 100 Main Street, Johannesburg
Branch number: 197905

Equipment, supplies and services

Every rand we save on office-supplies, computers, specialised services, etc. is another rand that goes towards working for equality. So, if you are in a position to offer us free or discounted equipment, supplies or services do not hesitate to contact Bridgette Oliphant our administrator.

Volunteering

Volunteers have played and continue to play an important role in the work of NGOs. The Lesbian and Gay Equality Project encourages the involvement of volunteers to assist with performing its various tasks.

Volunteers offering their services will be evaluated and contracted based on the identified and agreed needs of the organisation. Generally volunteers will be contracted for a period of between 3 weeks and 4 months. From time to time the organisation may also actively try to recruit volunteers to fulfil particular needs.

Volunteers will be drawn from the broader community with particular preference to working the area of LGBTI issues. Volunteers will be provided with testimonials as proof of work experience.

For more information contact Bridgette Oliphant.

Internships

The Lesbian and Gay Equality Project encourages the use of interns in the organisation provided that the work that they do contributes directly to the aims and objectives of the organisation.

Wherever possible preference will be given to South African interns. In exceptional cases the we will consider foreign nationals for specific tasks. In these instances the Lesbian and Gay Equality Project will not be responsible for securing work permits, although we will provide a letter to the Department of Home Affairs detailing the work and contractual agreements.

The Lesbian and Gay Equality Project would also assist local interns/trainees who need an opportunity to gain some work experience by bringing them into the organisation for a limited period of time.

All interns will have a contract specifying their roles and responsibilities in the organisation. They will also be assigned a manager/mentor for the period that they would spend in the organisation. In the case of trainees, the contract would be for a minimum of one-month and maximum of three months. In the case of foreign nationals it will not be for more than a six-month period.
