Cruisers - CGs

Modern U. S. Navy guided missile cruisers perform primarily in a Battle Force role. These ships are multi-mission (AAW - Anti-Air Warfare, ASW - Anti-Surface Warfare, ASUW - Anti-Submarine Warfare) surface combatants capable of supporting carrier battle groups, amphibious forces, or of operating independently and as flagships of surface action groups. Due to their extensive combat capability, these ships have been designated as Battle Force Capable (BFC) units. The cruisers are equipped with Tomahawk ASM (Anti-submarine Missile)/LAM( Land Attack Missile) giving them additional long range strike mission capability.

Technological advances in the Standard Missile coupled with the AEGIS combat system in Ticonderoga class cruisers and the upgrading of older cruisers have increased the AAW capability of surface combatants to pinpoint accuracy from wave-top to zenith. The addition of Tomahawk ASM/LAM in the CG-47, CGN-36 classes, has vastly complicated unit target planning for any potential enemy and returned an offensive strike role to the surface forces that seemed to have been lost to air power at Pearl Harbor.

CLASS VARIANTS

Modifications to accept newly manufactured AEGIS system equipment were phased in during the building of the class. This resulted in the subdivision of the class into a number of different baselines. Four baselines were originally planned. Eventually seven evolved. Initially each baseline represented a point at which upgrades are introduced into new construction.

Variant Ship Change
Baseline 0 CG-47/48 Basic Aegis Mark 7 system, with AN/SPY-lA, Weapons Control System Mark 1, Standard-MR (SM-2) Block I missiles, the Mark 116, Mod. 4 ASW fire control system, and the LAMPS-I (SH-2F ) ASW helicopter. AN/UYK-7 computers employed. Both have since had their combat systems up dated to Baseline 1 status, but do not carry towed sonar arrays. Both are still projected to be updated with Mk 41 vertical launch groups in place of the Mark 26 launchers and 5"/62 cal. Mark 45, Mod. 4 extended-range 127-mm guns in place of the original Mark 45 mountings are to be fitted. The AN/U YK-43 computers replaced the AN/UYK-7 and AN/UYK-20 set. Weapons-control and communications suites are to be upgraded.
Baseline 1 CG-49/51 The RAST haul-down and deck-maneuvering system and AN/SQQ-28 helicopter datalink system were added for LAMPS-III Seahawk (SH-60B) helicopters, Standard-MR (SM-2) and missiles were installed, the AEGIS system received improved data displays, and the electronic warfare s uite was enhanced. Both masts are tripods vice quadrapods. They are to have their electronic engineering systems updated to reduce maintenance costs, and the combat systems are to be updated as in the modernized Baseline 0 pair.
Baseline 2 CG-52/58 The Mark 41, Mod. 0 vertical-launch system was substituted for the Mark 26 twin-armed launchers and a vertical-launch Tomahawk capability with AN/SWG-3 launch control system was added, as were an improved Link 11 datalink system and LTYQ-21 displays. ANTIETAM and LEYTE GULF had stand-alone AN/SQR-19 linear towed passive sonar arrays and AN/SQS-53A. MOBILE BAY and later units substituted a 7.32-m rigid inflatable boat for the 26 ft. (7.9 m) motor whaleboat. SAN JACINTO introduced the AN/SQQ-89 (V)3 integrated ASW suite, with the AN/SQQ-53B hull-mounted sonar, AN/S QR-19 towed array, and Mark 116, Mod. 6 ASW fire-control system. All are planned to be updated to carry Standard SM-3 missiles to perform Theater Missile Defense missions and to employ the Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC). The electronic engineering systems are also to be updated.
Baseline 3 CG 59/64 The lighter AN/SPY-1B radar, with improved radiating characteristics, was substituted for the AN/SPY-1A and new computers (AN/UYK-43 and AN/UYK-44 in place of AN/UYK-7) are employed. In 1996, MONTEREY became the first of this group to be upgraded with the AN/SPY-1D(V) radar and received a combat system upgrade including all-new combat system computers, consoles and displays; the upgrade will permit future installation of such planned upgrades as Cooperative Engagement Capability, Theater Ballistic Missile Defense capability, and new versions of the Standard miss ile (see Cruiser Conversion Program notes under MODERNIZATION/CONVERSIONS above).
Baseline 4 CG 65-73 The AN/SPY-1B(V)D radar, with AN/UKY-43B and AN/UYK-44 computers in place of AN/UYK-7 and AN/UYK-20, was installed, and the ships received the improved AN/UKY-20 data display system and various decision aids. All ships of the group had the AN/SQS-53C bow sonar and the AN/SQR-17 sonar data processor.
Baseline 5 ** Adds capability to operate Standard (SM-2) Block IV (AEGIS ER), Standard (SM-2) Block IVA ATBM and SLAM .
Baseline 6 ** Adds the ability to operate Evolved Sea Sparrow. This baseline also includes an update of the computers in older units
Baseline 7 ** The combat control information system will be changed from a federated to fully distributed system.

In 1996, MONTEREY became the first Baseline 3 ship to upgrade to Baseline 3A, receiving the Baseline 5 Phase III computer program and equipment upgrade, with Joint Tactical Information Display System (JTIDS, Link 16 Mod. 5), the latest AN/UYK-21 display system, and AN/UYK-43 computers in place of U YK-7. PRINCETON, NORMANDY, CHANCELLORSVILLE, COWPENS and GETTYSBURG are to receive similar upgrades, except that PRINCETON and GETTYSBURG may get AN/UYQ-70 displays in place of AN/UYK-21. The first AN/SQS-53D bow sonar update sets were ordered for ships of this class on Dec. 30, 1996. Many ships of the class have had the towed hydrophone arrays removed and put into storage.

**The last three baselines represent new upgrades that will be added to certain ships in this class.
