Microsoft suffers Window blow from EU
The EU struck at the commercial backbone of Microsoft’s global software empire today (12/22/04) – forcing the company for the first time to strip its Windows platform of a popular feature to give competitors a better shot at success.

An EU court ruled Microsoft must immediately divulge some trade secrets to competitors and produce a version of its flagship Windows operating system without the program that plays music and video.

What`s Missing in the Paying Bloggers to Blog Vision ?

It seems that the controversy of the "Marqui Blogosphere Program" is bigger and bigger day after day.

Let`s see what`s happening right now.

1. The vision of Marc Canter is very clear:

PAYING BLOGGERS TO BLOG

- Technology Platform: Socia Media conversation tools.

- Business Model: Very similar to the leader IT analyst Gartner Group.

2. The Blog Ethics Debate:

IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN TRUST AND INTEGRITY IN THE MEDIA BUSINESS:

EDITORIAL AND ADVERTISING MUST ALWAYS BE CLEARLY SEPARATED

3. The Marqui Response:

Marqui CEO Stephen King said in Nov. 13, 04 on the Vancouver Sun Canada Newspaper:

" The Marqui Blogosphere program is actually no more of a risk than giving your product to a Gartner analyst"

"You have to buy their service even to get them to look at you"

"You pay to be part of the club. Then they could take a look at 10 products and say you`re number 10"

4. The Remaining Challenge

Don`t get me wrong ! This is a very clever strategy !!!

But, if we look deeper, there is an important guideline missing.

In the Gartner`s Principles on Independence and Objectivity, the number 8 is in my opinion the most important one.

""""""""""""""""

8. What guidelines and procedures are in place to insure the independence and objectivity of research analysts?

Each piece of Gartner research is subject to a rigorous peer review process by the worldwide analyst team. Two levels of sign-off approval are required prior to publication. This process is designed to surface any inconsistencies in research methodology, data collection, and conclusions, as well as to utilize fully Gartner's collective expertise on any research topic. ("First Takes", which provide rapid commentary on new market developments, receive one level of peer review prior to publication.)

""""""""""""""""

Therefore, the Marqui Blogosphere Program will be an absolute success only if a similiar "Peer Review Process" is implemented somehow in the Blogosphere.

Of course, I know this is not an easy task but nevertheless it`s mandatory to do it if we want to show that the new Social Media Business is completely trustful and without any coflicts of interest.

Just one last important comment:

This is not an alternative proposal like the "BLOG ETHICS COMITTE" proposed by Jason Calacanis and Nick Denton of Weblogsinc and Gawker Media respectively. Their idea is to create some standards in Blog Advertising.

I support totally the Free Speech Blogosphere. NO REGULATION.

THIS IS ALL ABOUT INDEPENDENCE AND OBJECTIVITY !!!
