The star witness against former WorldCom chief Bernard Ebbers was grilled by a defense lawyer Wednesday about lies he told over and over to investors, his own board of directors and the U.S. government.

With New York's most popular job-creation program set to expire next month, the state's economic development chief urged lawmakers Wednesday to pass legislation that would not only continue the tax-incentive program but prevent abuses.

Peter R. Murphy, a senior managing director at Bear Stearns Cos., may face a lawsuit from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in connection with an investigation by regulators into mutual-fund practices. "Mr. Murphy has been notified that the staff of the SEC is considering recommending that the SEC bring an administrative proceeding against him," according to a filing that the 22-year veteran of the firm submitted to the National Association of Securities Dealers.
