They aren't going to win many games with Stephon Marbury sitting on the bench for the entire fourth quarter, but last night the Knicks were playing the Milwaukee Bucks, who were without injured star Michael Redd, in what probably will turn out to be a battle for lottery position.

There was no last-second bolt from the blue that everyone was hoping for - only rumors. No encouraging ring of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman's cell phone, and no sudden churning of union president Bob Goodenow's fax machine in Toronto. A few ticks after 1 p.m. yesterday, inside a hotel ballroom in Manhattan, Bettman strode to the microphone and said it was his "sad duty" to make the NHL the first sports league to cancel an entire season because of labor strife.
