- Faith in Exile: The Lesson of Tibet
For the last half-century, the Tibetan people have endured the brunt of some of the Chinese government’s most brutal policies. In the 1990's, an international activist movement, which attracted a small army of A-list celebrities, brought the Tibetan struggle to the mainstream. But since 9/11, Tibet has all but disappeared from the front page.
September 11th was a tragedy for the American people, but it was a boon for totalitarian regimes around the world. In the pursuit of its so-called “war on terror,” the United States has forged military alliances and inked trade deals with some of the world’s most repressive regimes. On September 13, 2001 China was quietly admitted to the World Trade Organization, and given Most Favored Nation status by U.S., despite the fact the country is one of the world’s worst human rights abusers.
With its economy booming, China has become desperate to exploit Tibet's vast mineral and fuel reserves - and that has meant keeping a tight grip on any moves towards Tibetan autonomy. Arrests, torture and destruction of local culture continue despite the tireless work of Tibetan exiles and their high-profile western allies. In fact, the situation grows more dire by the day. Yet unlike an increasing number of indigenous liberation movements, Tibetans have not resorted to violence to achieve their goals.
In Faith in Exile, GNN asks, "Does the non-violent resistance of the Tibetan people provide a valuable lesson for a world in turmoil?" Produced: 2004

The latest Mosaic Special Report, ELECTION 2004: THE MIDDLE EAST FACTOR, examines how the war in Iraq is changing the course of the 2004 Presidential Election. Polls show that for the first time in more than twenty years, voters consider U.S. foreign policy to be the most important factor in November. What was once a referendum on jobs and health care has now become, to a great extent, a question for voters of “Who can keep us safer?” How is each candidate shifting in response to the Iraq war and terrorism? Can the Arab media alter these elections by providing open airways to terrorists? And what about the shadow players, Al Qaeda and the Iraqi insurgents--how would a major strike against Americans change the course of our presidency?
To answer these questions, we bring together top journalists with on-the-ground experience in the Middle East. They analyze news reports from Arabic language news stations—from Al Jazeera Television to the Hezbollah-backed Al Manar TV—to show you how 300 million viewers in the Middle East are watching and reacting to the U.S. presidential elections. ELECTION 2004: THE MIDDLE EAST FACTOR brings you images and information you’ll find nowhere else on U.S. airwaves. Produced: 2004

- Faith In Exile: The Lesson of Tibet
September 11th was a tragedy for the American people, but it was a boon for dictators around the world. In the pursuit of its so-called 'war on terror,' the United States has forged military alliances and inked trade deals with some of the world's most repressive regimes. On September 13, 2001 China was quietly admitted to the World Trade Organization, and given Most Favored Nation status by U.S., despite the fact the country is one of the world's worst human rights abusers.
For the last half-century, the Tibetan people have endured the brunt of the Chinese government’s brutal policies. Since 9/11, their plight has all but disappeared from the headlines.
A dark chapter
The Chinese have long claimed Tibet is part of greater China. Shortly after the communists took power, in 1950 40,000 Chinese troops invaded Tibet, occupying the vast, arid land known for its rich history of Buddhism. Ten years later, Tibetans rose up and fought back. Tibetan exiles claim that 430,000 died during the uprising and the subsequent fifteen years of guerrilla warfare. Tibet’s spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, fled to India, where he has lived ever since. According to Tibetan activists, 1.2 million Tibetans have been killed in the years since.
In exile, the Dalai Lama has led one of the world's most high-profile non-violent resistance movements against a foreign occupier, attracting international support from tens of thousands of grassroots activists and scores of A-list celebrities.
Yet despite the tireless work of pro-Tibetan activists around the world, the Chinese government continues maintain its tight grip on Tibetan, with no let up in sight.
As China's economy continues to rapidly expand, it desperately needs Tibet's vast natural resources. Estimates of deforestation vary, but many experts believe as much as half of Tibet's natural forest cover has been destroyed since the Chinese occupation. Rich in oil, China has been pumping Tibetan oil out of Tibet with little or no of the wealth flowing back into Tibet. China has even admitted to dumping nuclear waste on the Tibetan plateau.
Detentions, kidnappings, torture and the destruction of Tibetan Buddhist heritage continue to this day.
Featuring activists, archival footage, and interviews with Tibetan and environmental activists, Faith in Exile offers a powerful lesson for troubled times. Faith in Exile features the dramatic story of Palden Gayatso, a Tibetan monk imprisoned and tortured for 35 years in a Chinese jail. His courage and spirit in the face of overwhelming cruelty is a lesson in how only love can overcome hate.
Editorial note from GNN:
Faith in Exile was originally conceived to air during what was to be the biggest Tibetan Freedom Concerts ever (London, 2001) - sadly the concert never happened. GNN, in conjunction with the Milarepa Fund and Students for a Free Tibet, completed the project for use by activists and the GNN community.
Alternate views:
For another point of view on China, Tibet and the Dalai Lama, see Disinfo.com, where you can read information regarding allegations the Tibetan resistance was aided by the CIA, as well as a scathing critique of Tibet's pre-invasion feudal society and the Dalai Lama's philosophy.
For the official Chinese government's side of the story see: China's Tibet

- the Miami Model
In November, 2003, trade ministers from 34 countries met in Miami, Florida, to negotiate the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). FTAA threatens to devastate workers, the environment, and public services like health care, education, and water, and to destroy indigenous rights and cultural diversity across North, Central, and South America.
Thousands of union members, environmentalists, feminists, anarchists, students, farm workers, media activists, and human rights activists who gathered in Miami to struggle against the FTAA were brutally attacked with rubber bullets, pepper spray, electric guns and shock batons, embedded reporters and information warfare, all coordinated by the new United States Department of Homeland Security.
Against Capital’s model of paramilitary oppression, information warfare, and corporate rule, we offered models of grassroots resistance, creative action and solidarity. Produced: 2004

- Clarity performs
GNN is proud to feature a guest video from one of our favorite up-and-coming political bands, Clarity. Their song "Steal" is an anthem for a generation sick and tired of being ruled by criminals. In the track’s final blistering verse, frontman Michael Kane breaks into a rapid-fire account of the allegations that the CIA aided the importation of cocaine into the black communities of Los Angeles during the 1980s. This segment was gleaned from Mike Ruppert's legendary, and tragic, 1999 article "Blacks Targeted by CIA," in which Ruppert asserts:
"[I]s there a supportable case that the CIA directly intended for African-Americans to receive the cocaine which it knew would be turned into crack cocaine and which it knew would prove so addictive as to destroy entire communities? The answer is absolutely, yes."
Clarity is a progressive hip-hop group combining hip-hop and rock styles. But don't call them "rap metal." Their 2nd CD entitled THIS IS NOT A TEST is a cultural/political fusion that defies categorization. It features an interview with Sander Hicks, a hip-hop remix of 9/11 Research Godfather Mike Ruppert as well as a piece titled "loss & losing," featuring an excerpt of Ahundhati Roy's historic speech at the Riverside Church in Harlem, NYC.
Clarity is headed by Michael Kane, a self-described social-sculptor working in the tradition of Joseph Beuyes, the artist who declared, "Everyone is an Artist." Michael is a frequent contributor to From the Wilderness, and has had articles published by Global Research, Global Free Press, as well as GNN.tv. He is an associate producer for Shadow Government TV, the production team who produced "BUSH KNEW," which was a finalist in Move On's "Bush in 30 Seconds" Ad contest. This Mosaic Special Report examines how different broadcasters in the Middle East, including Alhurra, are reporting on the same stories. How do the underlying values, politics, and patriotism of each media channel impact what you see on the screen? What role does journalistic integrity and professionalism play? How do the governments in each region affect the way news is reported? And finally, how can we better understand each other by watching the vastly different reports coming from each network? To find answers, we talk to the producers and journalists responsible for news coverage from the wide range of Arabic language networks - independent, state-sponsored, Islamic and now even U.S. backed. Link TV's series, Mosaic: World News from the Middle East, features selections from daily TV news programs produced by national broadcasters throughout the Middle East. The news reports are presented unedited and translated, when necessary, into English.
Mosaic includes television news broadcasts from selected national and regional entities. Some of the broadcasters are state controlled and others are private networks, often affiliated with political factions. These news reports are regularly watched by 280 million people in 22 countries all over the Middle East.
Link TV is the first nationwide television network dedicated entirely to programs that offer a global perspective on world issues and culture. The non-commercial Link TV is available as a free basic service in the over 21.5 million U.S. homes that receive DIRECTV (channel 375) and EchoStar's DISH Network (channel 9410). Produced: 2004

- BattleGround - Trailer
This is a short trailer for GNN's new feature film, coming Spring 2004.
BattleGround
Dispatches from the Edge of Empire
The reports out of Iraq get worse by the day: Explosions, suicide bombs, rocket attacks, ambushes, looting, rape, murder. Recently, the president announced the CIA has given him six months, "at most, to restore order there and quell the violence, or else we risk losing the support of the Iraqi populace."
The clock is ticking.
In late 2003, two filmmakers from the Sundance award-winning Guerrilla News Network spent three weeks on the frontlines of this simmering guerrilla war, gathering intelligence, dodging bullets, and capturing the untold stories of what has become the world's most covered, and misunderstood, conflict.
BattleGround is an irreverent journey that will challenge the orthodoxies of Left and Right, and highlight the humanity of all sides of the conflict. Funny, poignant, insightful, BattleGround will be a critical film for anyone who wants to understand the powerful forces that are sucking America deeper and deeper into a Middle Eastern quagmire.
Is Iraq our generation's "Bright Shining Lie," or is it the frontline in a global battle for national survival? Or is to some combination of both? Produced: 2004
