It is
with great sadness that the Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe
report the death of Poliyana "Tsitsi Tiripano" Mangwiro
on Saturday 12 May at 6o'clock in the evening.
Poliyana
struggled valiantly against AIDS for two years and maintained
her fighting spirit right up to the very end. Until the very
end, she talked about the plans she had once she came back
to the office. She was buried at 10:00 o'clock on Monday 29
May 2001 in Chitungwiza, a town just outside Harare.
|
|
Poliyana
rose to prominence within the gay and lesbian movement in
this country when she stood up at the Zimbabwe International
Book Fair in 1996 and defended the rights of lesbian and bisexual
women.
On returning
home she was met by an angry mob of protesters from the ZANU-PF
women's league and the ZANU-PF Youth League. She was forced
to flee and return to her rural home for a few weeks. MORE

'
African men, African critics have attacked me because I have been
tolerant towards an issue (lesbianism) which they consider unthinkable
in Africa. They are hostile, also. Which is, of course, hypocritical,
because if something is unthinkable you don't have to be so hostile
about it - you can dismiss it.' - Ama Ata Aidoo, playwright,
poet and former Minister of Education, Ghana.
