AFLAX stands for 'Asynchronous Flash and XML. Defined simply, AFLAX is a development methodology which combines Ajax and Flash to create more dynamic web based applications.

Xamlon claims that AFLAX is a 'simpler development technology' and also more easily made suitable to mobile applications than Ajax (although mention of XAML aspects of AFLASH in the Xamlon introductory description appears to indicate a Microsoft operating system platform-specificity).

There are multiple implementations that could be qualified as AFLAX'.

  • Macromedia FLEX is a "presentation-tier" from the company which produced Flash. It features several AFLAX capabilities.
  • Xamlon implements XAML, for maximum compatibility with Microsoft operating systems.
  • OpenLaszlo is an open-source AJAX framework that currently targets the Flash Player. It was originally developed by Laszlo Systems
  • The AFLAX Library is a JavaScript library that enables developers to fully leverage the Macromedia Flash Platform using JavaScript. The project is open source and under the GPL.

AFLAX was pioneered in part by Paul Colton, the original creater of Macromedia JRun.
